 Whanaketanga Life Skills Course for Young People from 15 with a school exemption to 20 years of age. The course content encourages participation in a range of activities. Community Projects and other work at no charge for labour, working on reserves and marae are part of the content. In addition it is an opportunity to develop skills such as Cooking, first aid, drivers license, Drug and Alcohol Education, Stopping Violence and Sexual Health and the responsibility that goes with becoming sexually active. There are some trips away out of Christchurch tramping, Marae stay and team building. This course offers lots of experiences to be a part of and we encourage full participation. We have 2 tutors on course who are Youth Workers and have experience in working with Young People to lift self esteem, develop positive behaviours and get the best outcomes for course members. An interview will provide all the information and the opportunity to develop an Individual Plan that will best meet the needs of the Young Person. We aim to empower the Young Person and support improving decisions that can impact on their future. This course has no cost attached to attend and participate. Ministry of Youth Development fund this course. There are limited places. Whakatu-tia Nga Wero A course for Young People with a history of offending between the age of 14 and 16 years. This was a new initiative funded by the Ministry of Youth Development and came out of the Youth Offending Strategy. The course has been running since February 2003 and provides Young People the opportunity to address the issues that may have lead to the offending/behavior. As of the 1 July 2009 this course is now funded by Child Youth and Family. The course content is an opportunity to develop skills such as Cooking, numeracy and literacy, first aid, drivers license, Drug and Alcohol Education, Stopping Violence and Sexual Health and the responsibility that goes with becoming sexually active. There are some trips away out of Christchurch tramping, Marae stay and team building. There are lots of experiences to be a part of on this course and we encourage full participation. We have 2 tutors and a Case Manager on course who are Youth Workers and have experience in working with Young People to lift self esteem, develop positive behaviors and get the best outcomes for course members without offending behaviors. This course has no cost attached to attend and participate. Child Youth and Family fund this course. There are limited places and referrals are through Social Worker, Police, School or whanau. Young People may attend if 14 and 15 years with a school exemption or under section 71 of the Education Act. There is no closed start date and an interview will determine the appropriate individual plan for the Young Person.
